1st set. This clip contains most of the service games of everyone, point by point. there were some exchanges of service break. newyorker/chipncharge won by either one or two breaks, couldn't remember.
2nd set. It passed midnight. thanks to waterboy, although he was so tired and eager to play, he still got several games for us. chipncharge served at 5-4 for the set, a couple of loose points caused his only break on serve that night, it was so strange, wasn't it?:) next game, they got a set point again on henry 2nd serve, they could not convert. went into the super-tiebreak, it was ups and downs for both sides. final score was like 10-8 won by chicago pair. it was a lot of fun that made this four played 2 more doubles the morning after the next. everyone was crazy.

Henry: very good service. strong pace and depth on both 1st and 2nd. strong topspin forehand, ball dip around net players' foot and almost no UE from that side. backhand side had no chance to show much except for serve return. most of times, he ran around to hit a fh. he was active at net, his approaches caused some return errors. but sunny's serve was not so strong to set offensive position for him.
Sunny: serve was not lightning fast but placed very well. returns were very good, low and nice angle. he could not only generate pace on groundies but also use his opponents' pace very well. he handled low and wide volley surprisingly well on backhand. you really have to play him in single to fully appreciate his groundies and point-construction, which i was lucky to have a chance with him in single.
newyorker: man! what to say. he is the double specialist! he doesn't serve hard, i think he even never try to. he is not very tall but he uses it for his advantage. he serves flat, low, near the lines and corners which makes his serve very hard to attact. as he tosses he is already inside the baseline and starts moving forward. henry said newyorker was like a snowball rolling towards the net, when you hit the return he had been waiting for you. he doesn't need to bend his knees:) he has quick and nice hand, great anticipation as well. he chips on every returns. if the serve and net partner do know how to co-operate, he will neutralize strong serve easily. he depenses well at baseline with good lobs.
chipncharge: i haven't partnered with newyorker before, but we played against each other so many times. i knew what i needed to do that night: serve and return well to set newyorker up at net and cover the back court a little bit in case he got lobbed.

Great jobs of organizing everything and even better jobs of posting. It was amazing how you guys could still played singles after I left. I was already so tired by the end of the doubles, and my foot felt like stuck on muds. It was a very nice competitive doubles. But mostly what I remembered was the short angle passing shot that went pass me by Sunny's backband on setpoint, 2nd set tie-break! Always remember those got pass me. Great shot by Sunny.

C&C and NewYorker controlled the whole double match. Let's talk about the lesson learned to play double. As you may notice, Sunny and I tend to stay on baseline when serve or return, so one of us stay in the net and the other on baseline. C&C and NewYorker will approach to net whenever and as quick as possible.
The two different strategies have pros and cons, and whoever perform precisely will dominate. I will say NY team's stragety is better, and they always block well our first return and keep pressure on until easy winner appears. It is safe to play our way, especially when volley becomes unreliable with too many unforced errors. That is how we got one set, when NewYorker got tired. The video did not precisely show the speed of our balls , some of which are fast with topspin. NewYorker's volley and touch is great , which gave us no way passing easily and had to lob a lot. C&C is a shark ready to hammer us anytime, hence made our return game more difficult. Impressive double strategy!!!

hehe, you two are singles. Double is totally different, you got to take the net, especially for 4.0 or above. Newyorker has amazing volley skill: seems floating, but acutally all land to deep spot that you can not easily attack. Since both of they are at net with good volley and overhead, you guys were in trouble cause most time you can not hit good low passing shot: do not know where to hit!!! Two guys are there, no much open. Might got a few down the lines, but also miss more :P

as you said, either both up or one back on up has pros and cons. even professional players, especially lady's double, use up and back, sometimes both back. because two of you have never played together, it was hard to get chemistry going. but your topspin fh was giving us problems. newyorker's volley sometimes seemed floating because it was difficult to put away a topspin dipper. instead, he had to block it back softly and gave henry no pace to hit with. Raymond, you have to pay attetion here and learn from henry. if it had been in singles, henry might have passed newyorker million times. but he kept his cool, looped the balls down in the middle one after another, until he got a putaway. i remember one winner he looped over the net with so much margin and landed inside baseline with so much as well. Raymond, you have solid technique on fh topspin, you should have done well in singles against net- rasher. you need keep your cool.

i was so sorry to have not played with you that day. you played with newyorker in singles. we don't need the score, give us a recap. now everybody knows he is a doubler, you are a singler. that could produce something interesting.

That is fine. When you arrived, I was playing games in double. When we finished, you were in games :) It was really fun to hit with waterboy and Newyorker.
As for the single match, we did not finished. Just played until 4:4, both of us agreed to quit because we were so tired :P. I took a chance to break Newyourker at 3:3, but I can not hold mine at the last game. I guess he got more break chances before that just can not take it. I have to fight hard since he was playing with so different style that I used to handle in single. But I am glad that I hold my first 3 services games. I remembered that I was down 0:40 one game. And after deuce, he got a few more :) He got to net so quick and placed the ball so well that I can not easy hit a good passing shot. Just have to ran side by side to generate chances. Hope can paly with this style more on my best condition. It was really fun. Hope can still make a trip next year :)

Technically, I think "both up" is better and more easy to win points. Baseliner has too less chance to win doubles. I lost too many double matches this way, and have to change style. This is systematic problem, and need more serious matches to improve. Single match is different. I wish opponent to move forward before the ball is not setup well enough. That will give me easy pass, because I dont worry about another guy block me in the net. But it is good weapon to serve/volley into my backhand from ad-in side using your huge serve. Another thing, sometime I over-protect my backhand and hit forehand with too much open space on forehand side, you should attack quickly with backend straight line . I did not tell you these weakness before, and will not remind you before we finish a match next time :-)

both come to net is way better. hitting at baseline might be able to win some points under 4.0, almost no chance in 4.5 or up.

newyorker64 (tennis junky) 於 (Thu Sep 20 22:37:05 2007) 提到:
agree that "both up" is the best way for advance doubles. most points are really won at net at the higher level of doubles. totally different game than singles. serve and volley may still has a place in singles games, but it is really not a style anymore, it will not servive in today's powerful ground stroke games, rather it is just a good effective mixed-up strategy play.
good net plays require good footwork and good anticipation. it may not seem obvious, by physical condition also plays a big part for a good net rusher because you have to be moving all the time. even half a step slow will make the volleys uneffective, and you will be a sitting duck at the net for your opponents, especially for players who have good groundies like Henry and Sunny. I lost a step or two towards the end of the second set, so even when CC and I were up 5-3 and had set point, we could not covert, I simply ran a little too much up to that point(also deep into the 3rd hours of playing), my volleys weren't deep enough, and it was target practice time for Henry and Sunny.
Asus has a very good singles game. yeah, we were both too tired at that point. even though i had many break chances, i couldn't put away the balls at net. Asus had some great gets. Big top spin forehands.
It was also great to hit with couple of other big top spin forehand like Ncode and Raymonds. lots of fun. looking forward to doing it again soon.

I need play more and more doubles next year :) Man, my volley, especially half volley, is really bad. I dare not SV at all. Most time I will get passed or volley into net for those low heavy top spin return. You did really well for those kinds of returns. Quite amazed me. Some heavy low returns I even did not think you could volley back, but you did and even with good depth and placement. Lots to learn :(
