I have been priveleged to know Mrs Chen Liqiong since 1982.In November of that year we both attended the first International Conference on Ancient Chinese Pottery and Porcelain in Shanghai, organised by the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics。During the session devoted to poster presentations I talked with her about her home in Sichuan, and the unique and interesting ceramics produced in that area。Over the last 27 years since then international conferences have been organised on eight occasions,in 1986,1989,1992,1995,1999,2002,2005,2009,and each meeting has provided a stimulus to learning new information about ceramics, and exchanging information with good friends and colleagues。On each occasion that Mrs Chen Liqiong and I met again, she would bring me up-to-date with developments in her field of scholarship, and then we would have a commemorative photograph taken together。When I look back through the photos I find that I have changed and aged over the passage of years, but Mrs Chen is hardly different! Her youthful good looks and enthusiasm are similar to the time we first met。
In 1987 Chen Liqiong published 四川古代陶瓷,which introduced a new audience to the ceramic history of the province。In 2001 her book 古代陶瓷研究was published, and encapsulated her 40 years of experience and research into the ceramic history of Chongqing。It discussed the forms and decoration of celadon wares through the ages, and explained in detail how the Buddhist makara design was used on ceramics。Now,a new work on the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River and Ceramics of China will appear。It has two themes that are woven together。The first chapter of the book is devoted to ceramics excavated in the Three Gorges area。A wide range of wares, dating from the Eastern Han dynasty to the Ming dynasty, are described。Their discovery is also used to discuss two important themes。The first is communication and trade, and the second the development of ceramics in China。Chapter 2 brings together a number of significant previous publications, including conference papers, articles and sections of books。Many of these are out-of-print or difficut to get hold of,so this synthesis is useful for scholars。
This book is special in many ways。In the first place,it explores in fine detail the geology, geography and history of the Three Gorges area and how they relate to research on ceramics unearthed there。Secondly, and by means of this muliti-faceted approach,it brings the unique culture of the region into focus。Thirdly,it incorporates a lifetime of learning and scholarship on ceramics in one volume。For all these reasons, the publication of this book is significant, and of value to scholars and students alike。
