實際上Caltech競賽成績下降並不是因為DEI。以前，Caltech有一個專門給競賽生的獎學金(Axline)，所以可以招到不少競賽生，競賽成績也不錯。但是盡管提供獎學金，不少學生還是據了Caltech去了MIT。Caltech覺得這筆錢花的不值，就在2010年取消了這個獎學金。
