Which is more prestigious: USAMO qualification or USACO Camp qualification? - Quora
As of now, there are approximately 110 US pre-college students in Platinum (those who participated in the most recent Jan. contest). However, there are only about 2000 students who take USACO, meaning 5.5% are in the highest level.
Gold and Platinum levels on USACO have gone increasingly harder, very quickly, and not many people are moving from gold to platinum (maybe like 10-20 this contest). We see that it is getting harder and harder to qualify for Platinum division
Unlike USACO, the AMC series has a lot more buzz and more participants, usually because math competitions are easier to prep (due to the amount of resources) than coding contests, since US is not entirely as strong as coding than as math.
We can see that the number of participants in AMC 12 is about 30k and the number of qualifiers to AIME is even less. Finally, they only have about 300 students qualifying to USAMO.
I would say, doing well in USACO platinum is a lot more prestigious than qualifying for USAMO. However, qualifying into USAMO is a bit harder than qualifying for USACO Platinum division. In the long run, you shouldn't be focusing on which one is more prestigious; you should focus on the one which you love doing the most.
