Honors Language Arts 6: Foundations in Middle School Language Arts A Unit Project and Rubric: Teachin’ Speech Unit Project: Teachin’ Speech The Problem Think of something you’re good at. Like, really good at. A skill you’ve practiced so many times that you can doit nowwithout even thinking about it. This skill could be anything—speed-running a video game, doing a fish-tail braid, making the perfect cup of chai, completing a jigsaw puzzle... Now, imagine that you need to teach your classmates how to do this skill on their own. You need them to leave class on the last day of this unit ready to do their own fish-tail braid or make their own perfect cup of chai—or even beat you in a speed-run of your favorite video game. How would you do this? Would you just show your classmates step-by-step what to do? Or would you start by showing them why they should want to do it? Or, maybe you’d want to show them why they should trust you to teach them. Now that you think about it, you’ll probably need to do all three. This is the challenge you’ll tackle in this unit. By the time the final lesson rolls around, you’ll need to be ready to give a speech that teaches your classmates how to be as good at your chosen skill as you are. In other words, you’ll need to figure out how to answer the question: Howcanyoucraft aspeech that will teach others how to do something you’re good at? Your Project By the end of this unit, you will need to prepare a speech you will use to teach your skill to the class. Your classmates should walk away from your speech actually having learned to do the skill (or at least with enough knowledge that they could go out and try it), so you will need to accomplish all of the following in your speech: • Tapinto your classmates’ emotions to help them get invested in what you’re trying to teach them. (We’ll learn a rhetorical skill called pathos to help you do this.) • Demonstrate that you are an expert in this skill, so your classmates will know that they can trust your guidance. (Another skill we’ll learn in this unit—ethos—will help with this.) • Makeall of the necessary steps in the skill clear enough that your classmates can learn them. (Logos, the final rhetorical skill we will learn in this unit, will be your friend here.) And, so that everyone in class will have time to give their speeches on the last day of this unit, your speech must be no longer than five minutes.

Directions: Below is the speech that baseball player Lou Gehrig gave in a baseball stadium after playing in the final baseball game of his career on July 4, 1939. Gehrig was one of the greatest baseball players of all time, but he had decided to retire from the sport after his declining health started to affect his ability to play. As you read the speech, try to identify the Four Parts of a Speech: speaker, audience, occasion, and goal.

Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn’t consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure I’m lucky. Whowouldn’t consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball’s greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure I’m lucky. Whenthe NewYorkGiants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift- that’s something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies– that’s something. Whenyouhaveawonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her owndaughter– that’s something. Whenyouhaveafather and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body– it’s a blessing. Whenyouhaveawifewhohasbeenatowerofstrength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed– that’s the finest I know. So, I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I’ve got an awful lot to live for.
