The pay’s not really all that good. The living conditions may be either quite good or outright appalling. If you’re a Foreign Service Officer the odds of being under an incompetent political appointee / ignorant hack of an ambassador are not small. You will have to deal with a lot of not just uneducated but MIS-educated Ivy league morons…unless you are also a miseducated Ivy League moron and so don’t notice. You may be subjected to attack of some kind, ranging from Havana Syndrome to uncouth and unwashed persons taking you hostage.
