Can you get him to help you with chores?

 

He does not seem to take pride in a job well done, or have a sense of responsibility.

Praise him more. Treat him as an adult, with respect (尊重). Go to a Starbucks or an icecream shop and have him order something for you, then people-watching and chat. Try to "share a moment" with him.
