Accepted, it would be very helpful to MD/PhD in all schools and MD only in top schools. Just send the Letter of Acceptance of the manuscript to the admissions committee presumably he has described the research in the manuscript in his application.  If he only is a co-author in this manuscript, it might not be a big deal.
