“Ignoring the unsurprising perks of being a billionaire, I think these data confirm a frustration that many in the middle/upper middle classes feel: we’re not poor enough to get sympathy points, but not rich enough to buy our way in either.
The result is that children from families like mine are punished for our middling, workaday success. My wife and I both work full time and each earn salaries that are good-not-great in jobs that are important but not particularly prestigious. We are both first-generation college grads ourselves. We are far from wealthy, but our combined income (in a HCOL area) puts us somewhere around the nadir of that dip on the graph of likelihood of acceptance.
So..I guess it’s confirmed. Our feeling that the system is biased against people like us isn’t just a feeling.'
