(Be prepared to unplug while at the park as cell service is spotty. Use your smartphone as a camera by switching to airplane mode, or your battery will drain quickly.)

Lower Falls

This is hands-down my favorite spot in the park. Walk down 127 stone steps on a half-mile trail to a stone footbridge where you can view the park's Lower Falls. Don appropriate footwear for this hike, as mist from the falls dampens some pathways and can make for a rather muddy trek. Cross the footbridge and continue down the soggy footpath for additional views of the falls and the river gorge. While hiking you can run your hands over the gorge's walls of Devonian shale, limestone and sandstone.

Middle Falls

Steps away from the Glen Iris Inn, you will find Middle Falls. The 107-foot falls is among the busiest spots within the park. Pathways by the falls offer a variety of views from overlooks. Keep an eye out for rainbows, as you can often find one or two in the mist.

Upper Falls

Located less than a half mile from the popular Middle Falls, you can walk south on a path alongside the river to reach Upper Falls. An active train trestle spans the gorge above the falls and carries trains over the 140-year-old Portageville bridge, which is in the process of being replaced. Hikers are not allowed on the iron bridge.

Mount Morris Dam

The 313-foot-tall dam controls the flow of the Genesee River and provides flood protection for the Genesee Valley, including Monroe County. The dam, completed in 1952, is the largest concrete gravity dam east of the Mississippi River. An overlook just north of the Mount Morris entrance provides views of the dam and river gorge, and is often a great spot to view turkey vultures. Free tours of the dam are offered daily at 2 p.m. and also at 11 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. To take part, meet at the Dam's Visitor Center, 6103 Visitor Center Road, Mount Morris. For more on tours call (585) 658-4790.

Glen Iris Inn

Once the home of William Pryor Letchworth, the Glen Iris is now an inn and restaurant, which makes for a great spot for a midday meal. If possible, snag a table on the outdoor patio. Sandwiches, salads and entrees are all available from the varied lunch menu. Caroline's Restaurant is also open for breakfast and dinner. Adirondack chairs line the front of the house for patrons to rest their feet, or sip a beverage. The Inn is located atop a cliff near Middle Falls. Walk about 30 feet from the front door to an overlook for a panoramic view. The inn offers overnight lodging starting at $105 per night. Call (585) 493-2622 for more information.

Corning Glass Museum  (3-4 hours needed to go through. Another museum nearby, also glass collection and paintings, The Rockwell Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate.)

1 Museum Way, Corning, NY 14830

( 1 day travel—State Park gorge trail, find lunch in Watkins Glen, go to  Hector Fall View Point, and then to Finger Lakes Welcome Center, and come back to Seneca Lake Pier, go Sayre hotel.)
