Police hunting Coventry murder suspect Anxiang Du say someone knows where he is

POLICE hunting for the prime suspect in the murder of a family of four say someone in Coventry knows where he is hiding.

Anxiang Du, 53, of Witnell Road, Daimler Green, is accused of travelling to Northampton and slaughtering the Ding family following a nine year business dispute.

They were killed on April 29 last year – sparking a huge manhunt that has involved hundreds of officers.

Now, nearly a year after the murders, police are increasing the reward for information leading to Du’s arrest from £10,000 to £25,000.

They say that since he was tracked on CCTV cameras to London after the killings there has not been a single confirmed sighting of him.

But at a press conference yesterday Northamptonshire police officers said they will continue to “work tirelessly” to locate the Coventry man.

“Anxiang Du remains the prime suspect for this offence,” Det Chief Insp Tom Davies, said. “We still believe very strongly that he is alive and is being assisted by associates or friends.

“I accept he may have left the UK fairly soon after the murders.

“We have recently made arrests but for operational reasons I cannot comment further.

“He will still have associates in the Coventry area, there are people in Coventry we have spoken to and there are people in Coventry who haven’t yet come forward.

“He came to Coventry in the late 90s. He is a qualified doctor of Chinese medicine and he worked extensively throughout the UK, including Scotland and Wales.

“In terms of Anxiang Du the dispute with the Ding family began in around 2002. It has been going on since then.”

Officers investigating the murders have recently travelled to China to speak to the Ding’s extended family.

They also met with the Chinese Ministry of Security to discuss the case.

It’s led to speculation that Du is hiding in China but Mr Davies said that it is more likely he is living in another country within a Chinese community.

“The Chinese authorities are aware of Anxiang Du,” he said. “He is a UK passport holder – he doesn’t have a Chinese passport – and China is not the easiest country to gain access too.

“We do not believe he has gained access to China legally.”

Police also believe that Du may have changed his appearance – but do not think he has taken any drastic steps such as plastic surgery.

“He might have grown his hair a bit longer,” Mr Davies said.

“He might now have facial hair – we just don’t know.”

Northamptonshire Police is working with 43 police forces nationwide and through Interpol have accessed and are in touch with 180 countries worldwide.

There have been more than 2000 people visited and interviewed regarding sightings, information, intelligence and questioning.

There has been more than 5,000 hours of CCTV seized from around the UK.

In addition, there have been more than 380 suspect sightings, as well as nine arrests for various offences, some of whom were arrested in the belief that they were the suspect.

Mr Davies added: “I have to accept Anxiang Du may have left the UK.

“Someone must have assisted him and is likely to still be assisting him or aware of where he is.”

Four people were arrested last week on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They were released on bail.
