Field Marshal Montgomery SAS Rogue Heroes Paddy

I had no idea until recently:

Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, or “Monty,” spoke with strained breath because he had been shot through a lung by a sniper in WWI. The wound left him with lasting respiratory issues — impaired breathing, difficulty speaking, and a wariness born not of fear, but of hard-earned experience.

When he spoke, every word mattered. He’d seen what rushed decisions cost in blood. That’s why some American generals thought him “too slow.” But in truth, he was methodical, measured, and deeply human beneath the uniform.

So when Paddy turns to him and delivers his speech — full of confidence and modern gusto — Monty simply replies:

"That's all well and good, Major, but can you explain to me how an RBMK reactor explodes?"

A masterstroke of writing.
In one line, Monty reveals everything — his precision, skepticism, and lived cost of war.
And Paddy’s little chuckle? Bloody brilliant. It’s the sound of two generations of war clinking glasses across time.

Because war evolves.
Enemies evolve.
If you don’t evolve faster — you end up dead.
(And as Paddy says, “that’s a pretty shitty outcome — for most people.”)

"I don't care how bad of a shot you take. If it goes in, I won't yell at you."
- My basketball coach, Monty, and Churchill met in the desert for lunch.

Monty was disgusted at Churchill's drinking and smoking. "I neither drink nor smoke, and I am 100% fit!" Churchill replied, "I both drink and smoke, and ... I am 200% fit!"

Every last man standing there is a hero of the highest order in my humble opinion. My grandfather fought side by side with men like these as a part of the 2nd Armored Division. Thank you. I'll never take all I have for granted. All the original (desert) members of the SAS preferred the sand beret... It was theirs, and they wore them through the end of the war. Some preferred the service dress cap to the beret, and some the shemagh in the desert... And Paddy Mayne was an internationally known Irish rugby star before the war; he was already famous outside the military... He was under close arrest for striking a superior officer when David Stirling recruited him for SAS... Sadly, he was killed in a car accident after the war. Find me the name of BBC TV series.

Monty speaks of leaking air. I did not know until now: "@choughed3072 1 month ago Excellent detail to have Monty talk like this; he was shot through a lung by a sniper in WW1 and had a problem breathing and speaking, along with other health issues, for the rest of his life. His wound is also why the American generals thought he was too slow and cautious in planning battles, which he was, but because he saw firsthand what bad or rushed planning could do to an army during his WW1 service." Paddy's little chuckle at the end was bloody brilliant! In one statement, Montgomery told him everything he knew, felt, and did, which made him the ideal person for that unit. in that time, in that location, it was EXACTLY what was needed to be successful. War evolves, enemies evolve, and if YOU don't evolve quicker, then... YOU end up dead... and that's a pretty shitty outcome (for most people). Paddy: Does speech Monty: That's all well and good, Major, but can you explain to me how an RBMK reactor explodes?
