1937年8月13日，日軍進攻上海，中國軍隊奮起抵抗，展開了中國抗戰史上著名的八一三淞滬保衛戰戰鬥，曆時三月，殺傷日軍六萬餘人，後終因敵強我弱，我大場放線被突破。守軍國民革命軍第八十八師 第524團， 團長陸軍中校謝晉元，奉命率部隊掩護主力轉移，於十月二十六日進駐上海四行倉庫，誓死固守，孤軍激戰四晝夜，打退日寇10多次進攻，斃敵二千餘，傷敵無數.
這次保衛戰的成功，重新振奮了因淞滬會戰受挫而下降的中國軍民的士氣，在中國抗戰史上寫下光輝的一頁。
