By Public Transport there are three options
A) Bus 150 to Bad Ischl, train from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt, ferry across the lake to the village.
B) Train to Attnang Puchheim, train from Attnang Puchheim to Hallstatt, ferry across the lake to the village.
C) Bus 150 to Bad Ischl, bus 542 heading to Gosau and switch to bus 543.
Travel costs one way for option A
- Bus 150 = €10.10
- Train = €3.70
- Ferry = €2.40
- Total cost one way per adult = €16.20
Travel costs one way for option B
- Trains = €24.60 second class on both trains or €35.90 first class on the first train only. (See note below about the discounted ERT ticket)
- Ferry = €2.40
- Total cost one way per adult = €27 or €37.90(First class)
Travel costs one way for option C
- Bus 150 = €10.10
- Bus 542/543 = €4.60
- Total cost one way per adult = €14.70
Is a ticket for two to five people and is valid on ÖBB’s regional(R), regional express(REX) and S-Bahn trains. You can use Monday to Friday 09:00 to 03:00 on the following day. Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays from 00:01 until 03:00 on the following day. The price is €32 if you purchase from an ÖBB ticket machine. There is a supplement if you buy from a ticket office.
Travel Time Examples
A) Leave Salzburg main bus station on the 150 bus at 08:15 arrive at Hallstatt village at 11:11.
B) Using the ERT the first valid train on a working day departs at 10:39 and you arrive at Hallstatt railway station at 13:24. If the ERT is used on a bank holiday or at the weekend you could depart at 08:39 and arrive at Hallstatt railway station at 11:24.
B) Using standard tickets you could depart Salzburg at 07:12 and arrive at Hallstatt railway station at 09:24.
C) Leave Salzburg main bus station on the 150 bus at 08:15 arrive at Hallstatt village at 10:57.
On a working day A or C is the recommended option over B with the ERT. Because of the arrival time in Hallstatt for option B. On a non-working day option B makes sense for a group of people as it’s cheaper.

- A. Last ferry is at 18:15 to get a train that departs to Bad Ischl and onto Attnang Puchheim at 18:31.

- A. Last bus 543/542 is at 16:55. If missed get the 18:15 ferry/train to Bad Ischl.
- Q. Which route is the most scenic?
- A. Route A is very scenic once you reach Fuschlsee. Route passes through Fuschl, St Gilgen & Strobl on Wolfgangsee before reaching Bad Ischl. The train from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt is very scenic. Try to sit on left side of the 150 bus and right side of the train to Hallstatt for the best views. Route B is very scenic once you reach Gmunden. Best views from left side of train until Bad Ischl then right side down to Hallstatt.
- Q. Is there anywhere to leave luggage?
- A. There are left luggage lockers at the main Salzburg railway station. There are very limited lockers in Bad Ischl railway station. At Hallstatt you can leave luggage at the tourist office for a fee off €2 during workdays only. Office closes at 17:00 but they will leave uncollected luggage outside the office.

- Hallstatt Markt = Ferry stop in the village
- Hallstatt Bahnhst = Railway station (Other side of the lake from the village)
If searching for valid trains using the ERT ticket. Select Einfach Raus Ticket under products and Hallstatt Bahnhst as the destination. If searching for buses, trains (non ERT valid) & ferries select Hallstatt Markt as the destination. If searching for buses to Hallstatt select Hallstatt Lahn as the destination.
