NY

A friend who is not quite good at driving - They are going to visit NY for 3 days and NJ for 2 days.(visit Princeton univ and nearby area)

Is it better to have hotel in NJ then drive to NY (hotel has shuttle to NY) or is it better to have 3 nights hotel in NY and check out then check in hotel in NJ?

Any advise is appreciated!
