We made a tour on our own to India several years ago, when we landed in Bombay, and then went on to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Khajuraho, Varanasi, Sarnath (birthplace of Buddhism), etc. It was a great experience. It should be easy to get visa to India (with a passport from USA or Canada). It is better to stay in international chain hotels there, for about US$150/night on average. It is generally safe, but lots of beggars. I do not think you can enter India from China (Tibet connects Nepal, and West XinJiang goes to the military zone of North India..)
