Elegance & Romance: A Stroll Through Peking University, and the Quiet Brilliance of Hai Zi
The landscape of Peking University (北大) remains as graceful as ever—an enduring symbol of China’s intellectual spirit. The campus still breathes poetry, where the lake mirrors spring skies and stone paths echo with the footsteps of seekers. Even the emblem of the university—designed by Lu Xun, one of modern China's literary giants—bears a timeless strength.
In this storied place once walked Hai Zi (海子), the brilliant poet whose light burned too briefly. Born as Zha Haisheng, raised in the countryside of Anhui, Hai Zi entered Peking University at just 15 to study law. But it was poetry, not law, that ignited his soul. By age 25, he had written over 2 million words—poems, novellas, reflections—before his tragic death by suicide in 1989 at Shanhaiguan.
His last journey carried four books:
The Bible – a symbol of spiritual reckoning and ultimate grace
Walden by Thoreau – solitude, nature, and inner clarity
Kon-Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl – a tale of bold exploration across oceans
Collected Works of Conrad – psychological depth and the moral complexity of mankind
Hai Zi wrote with the force of a volcanic eruption yet lived with the humility of a monk. From "Facing the sea, with spring blossoms" to "Asia's Copper", his lines pulse with the ache of beauty, the weight of silence, and the longing to transcend.
He was called one of the “Three Poetic Swordsmen of Peking University (北大三劍客)” in the early 1980s.
Many of his poems like 《麥地》(The Wheat Field) and 《以夢為馬》(Ride the Horse of Dreams) have become spiritual cornerstones for a generation.
Today, his voice continues to stir hearts. In a world flooded with noise, Hai Zi reminds us:
"Be pure. Be sincere. Live poetically even in pain."
As we walk through 北大’s blooming spring, may we remember him—not just for his death, but for his luminous gift to Chinese literature. His work is not a relic, but a living dialogue.
Elegance and romance live not just in the landscape, but in the human spirit that dares to dream beyond the visible.
