It is a small protein that is very heat resistant.  It doesn't spread through contact, you need to ingest significant amount in order to get it. How it works is also different. It is not the cow version of the protein cause the disease, it is the human version. The human protein is harmless but when the structure of the human protein is converted to disease-causing form by cow protein, you get mad cow disease.
