Nat King Cole 在1919年（猜測）生於美國亞拉巴馬州 (Montgomery County)。他在芝加哥長大。科爾12歲就在教堂裏演秦管風琴，並加入唱詩班，儼然已經是個小小音樂人。他曾經加入過他的大哥領銜的“純粹搖擺者”樂隊。1936午，他決定單飛，他先到到洛杉磯，管理一個專門為時事諷刺劇配樂的樂隊。1937年，他有了自己的三重奏樂隊(King Cole Trio)，他亦彈亦唱，不少觀眾迷上了他那獨特的聲音，漸漸地，他成為一名很受歡迎的歌手，人氣不斷上竄。
1940年．他的樂隊終於有了在迪卡唱片公司錄音的機會。一時間，一批精彩的爵士樂唱片誕生了，其中包括1他為國會大廈唱片公司錄製的經典選曲。
Cole 在錄製了名噪一時的《Nature boy》和《The Christmas Song》後，又把熱情投入到鋼琴演奏上。真正讓他成為一線爵士歌手的，大概是他在1950創作的的《Monda lisa》(附視頻）（獲1950年的Academy award for best original song)。1950—1960年，Cole 的興趣轉向錄製流行民謠。很多人覺得他在演奏方麵的才華幾乎被演唱的成功所掩蓋，但他很難得的一直保持著一定程度的演奏技巧。他和第二任妻子有五個孩子。女兒Natalia Cole 繼承了他的演唱事業。關於他的八卦，在此略過：）
1965年2月25日．Cole 在加利福尼亞州聖莫妮卡逝世，年僅46歲。有人說，那是因為他是一個頑固的重度吸煙者；也有人說，他吸煙是因為演出的壓力太大；被多次記載的，是他在演藝生涯中所遭受過不同程度的種族歧視。在那些年代，願意接納一個有色人種在著名飯店裏演出的老板還不是很多。但他熬過來了。這個年46算是值了。
