With each breath out, imagine that you are breathing out all the stress, tension and anxiety that are in your body. At the same time, allow your body to become more and more relaxed, from head to toe (ie, from the crown of your head to your forehead, cheek, mouth, jaw, neck, shoulder, chest, etc, etc.) with each exhalation. This visualization is done in one swoop within the breath.
There are variations of visualizations that can also be used. The main thing is to let your breathing pattern becomes the focus of you mind.
You can assume this breathing pattern for a few minutes.
If a person has a very active mind, it is also helpful to find a suitable guided meditation or guided visualization CD to help you along. Many people enjoy the guidance of a soothing voice.
Another way of learning about meditation breathing is by going to yoga classes, be sure to pick one that has an emphasis on this element.
