The debate in my sentence is a noun.

The definition you quoted is for a verb. In my opinion, that definition is a little exaggerated. I think it is more suited for another verb: argue. When there is different opinions, you want discuss, negotiate,  and debate, but you don't want to argue,  which often become confrontational thus push two sides further apart. Personal attack is the most effective way to the worst result.
