Richard A. Hartzell begins his tenure as Principal of Upper School at Taipei American School after completing six years as Head of Upper School at The Harker School in San Jose, California. He holds A.B. Honors and Ph.D. degrees from Brown University

During his 33-year career, Dr. Hartzell has served as a teacher, coach, and administrator at a variety of prestigious institutions, including Brown University, Phillips Exeter Academy, Horace Mann School, St. Mark's School of Texas, The American School in Switzerland, Fundaci243;n Nuevo Marymount (Colombia), The Webb Schools, The Harker School, and, of course, Taipei American School.

He has taught Advanced Placement courses in seven subjects (English Literature, English Language, European History, Art History, French Literature, French Language, Spanish Literature), as well as multitudinous "standard" and elective classes. Dr. Hartzell has been head varsity coach of football, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, track, and baseball teams.

Dr. Hartzell already loves both Taipei American School and Taipei—and he looks forward to exploring all of Taiwan. It is clear to him that the people here are among the warmest, most hospitable in the world.

Richard has earned his reputation as a fair-weather runner, still dreams of being an avid hiker, and continues to rank the Shihlin Night Market in his top 50 favorite places to visit around the Jiantan MRT station.
