春夏的花叢中，大家常常可以看到一種像蜜蜂一樣采蜜的袖珍鳥 - 蜂鳥。顧名思義，蜂鳥形如蜜蜂，身長約3-5英寸，體重約1-3克，比蜜蜂略大，是世界上最小的鳥。在英文中被稱為“嗡嗡鳥”（Humming bird） - 因其拍打翅膀的嗡嗡聲（humming）而得名。
蜂鳥是北美特有的鳥，它們的體型很小，但飛行能力超強，翅膀可每秒種可拍15-80 次（15-80 Hz），所以能懸停在空中，可以垂直升降，也是唯一可以向後飛的鳥，飛行的速度高達90-100公裏/小時。正是因為這樣，它們的能量代謝也極旺盛，心跳能達到每分鍾500下，每天消耗的食品超過自身的體重，為了獲取巨量的食物，它們每天必須采食數百朵花。蜂鳥還有驚人的導航能力和記憶力，加拿大的蜂鳥每年冬天都要從寒冷的落基山脈飛行數千公裏抵達溫暖的墨西哥地區越冬，等到了來年春天，它們還要再次千裏迢迢地返回落基山繁育後代。
此外，在所有動物當中，蜂鳥的體態最妍美，色彩最豔麗。十八世紀法國博物學家喬治 .路易 .勒克萊爾 .布豐伯爵在他的著作《自然曆史 .蜂鳥》 中這樣形容蜂鳥：“… 蜂鳥是造物主的傑作，她把其它鳥類所有的優點統統加到了蜂鳥的身上：輕盈、迅疾、敏捷、優雅、華麗的羽毛，這小小的寵兒應有盡有”，因而他把蜂鳥稱作“袖珍巨寶”（maxime miranda in minimis）。接著，布豐伯爵興猶未盡，筆下進一步詩化蜂鳥：“蜂鳥從不讓它的羽毛沾染塵埃，它以天空為家，從花叢飛向花叢，像鮮花一樣新鮮，也像鮮花一樣絢麗。蜂鳥靠花蜜為生，隻生活在四季鮮花盛開的地帶。”
布豐伯爵筆下的蜂鳥，是不是也很詩情畫意？

Of all animated beings this is the most elegant in form and the most brilliant in colors. The stone and metals polished by our arts are not comparable to this jewel of Nature. She has placed it least in size of the order of birds, “maxime miranda in minimis.” Her masterpiece is this little humming-bird, and upon it she has heaped all the gifts which the other birds may only share. Lightness, rapidity, nimbleness, grace, and rich apparel all belong to this little favorite. The emerald, the ruby, and the topaz gleam upon its dress. It never soils them with the dust of earth, and in its aerial life scarcely touches the turf an instant. Always in the air, flying from flower to flower, it has their freshness as well as their brightness. It lives jupon their nectar, and dwells only I the climates where they perennially bloom.
