Instead, National University of Singapore (NUS) postgraduate student Zhang Lan, 29, died in a traffic accident on Saturday. The accident took place at the junction of North Buona Vista Road and Ayer Rajah Avenue at around 7.30pm, reported Shin Min Daily News. Mr Zhang and his wife were on their way back to their Dover Road home after having dinner. His wife told reporters: 'The pedestrian light had turned green and we crossed the road together. 'Suddenly, a taxi appeared and hit my hu*****and. He was knocked to the ground and his head was bleeding heavily.' Mrs Zhang said that she was also knocked down by the taxi and suffered abrasions on her right arm. Mr Zhang, who bore the brunt of the impact, lay unconscious on the ground. A passer-by called for an ambulance. Killed just weeks before getting his doctorate Mr Zhang was taken to the National University Hospital with multiple fractures and internal bleeding. He was declared dead at 2.44am. Scholarship Mr Zhang was from Sichuan, China. He came to Singapore in 2005 after receiving a scholarship from NUS and joined the school's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. According to his NUS Webpage, Mr Zhang's area of interest was wireless communications. Shin Min reported that he had already submitted his thesis and was expected to graduate in July. Mrs Zhang was at the mortuary with several friends yesterday. After seeing her hu*****and's body, she wept till she couldn't speak, hugging her friends tightly. The couple do not have any children. Friends of the deceased said that his brother is in the US and his parents are in China. They will arrive in Singapore within the next few days.
