The expression nowadays does not necessarily mean literally away from the locale in which one resides; rather, it is a generic phrase to denote that one is in a faraway place. Generally, it intends to convey that one is sufficiently distant as to render ineffective ordinary methods of communication or to make impossible any sort of close conference. Note that the analogous expressions for state and country are meant to be taken more literally.
