Well, I'm not completely positive about it. I had the impression they didn't use porters, because they never talked about it. I know they didn't make multiple trips. So if you are sure that's required for the base camp, they might have used porters. I could verify with some of them when I get a chance. It has been a few years. I only remember they spent at least one night above the basecamp before summit.

Anyways these friends are true athletes. Most of them have completed at least one marathon and finished within 4 hours. If Aconcagua is tough for them, it's probably not within my reach in the near future.

I wouldn't see this as a competition though. Everyone has his goals and limitations. It's nice to challenge yourself close to the limit occasionally. To me, it's more important to enjoy the experience and learn to appreciate other aspects of life along the way.
