The law firm hired to represent the House soon withdrew from defending the law, requiring the House to retain replacement counsel.[126] In the past two decades, public support for same-sex marriage has steadily increased,[51] and polls indicate that more than half of Americans support same-sex marriage.[51][63][64] Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington approved same-sex marriage by referendum on 6 November 2012.[127]
