Answer:
Read over many of your most commonly misspelled words and a few other ones which you could ask your teacher about.

Pay attention to similarities in different words. For example, if you hear the
"--shun" sound at the end of a word, you know it must be spelled "--sion" or
"--tion".

During the spelling bee, you can ask about word origin and definition. Sometimes these give hints about the spelling form.

Mostly, remember how you have learned to spell. As a young child, you learned the hard "k" sound followed by a short "a" with the "n" sound spelled "c-a-n". Later, you learned you could add an "e" and have "cane". You learned that if a word ended with a consonant, you doubled it when adding "-ed" for canned" and if it ended in "e" you would just add the "d" for "caned". Although spelling bee words are longer and harder, the basic lessons you learned of sounds and spelling still apply.

The final part is simply memorization. Study with someone so you can spell each word out loud. Practice saying the word slowly. If it can be pronounced a different way, say that out loud too so you become comfortable with it and so your brain is used to hearing it both ways. On hard words, break it up into syllables and make a sentence from the parts. For example, I can't spell camouflage without looking it up. I might say a sentence like Cam -ou- without the "y" has a flag with an "e" at the end. The funnier you make your sentence, the easier it will be to remember. But, be sure the word's pieces are in order in your sentence, like they are in the word you are trying to remember.
