NPD can be caused by a mix of factors, including family history, childhood experiences, mental health issues, and genes. Early childhood risk factors may include excessive praise or judgment by parents, or trauma or abuse.

Treatment for NPD primarily involves talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy. There are no medications to treat NPD, but if symptoms occur alongside depression or another mental health condition, medications may be used to treat the other condition.
