So frustrated at Chinese new year traditions

 You are not allowed to clean your house nor throw the trash away during the first 5 days of Chinese new year. Otherwise you throw away your fortune. Last lunar year New Year's Day, I pulled the trash bin back from the roadside to my yard because that day was the trash collection day and my tenant pulled the trash bin to the roadside in the morning. This drove my tenant craze. 
you are not allowed to take a shower nor do laundry during the first 1-2 days. You are not even allowed to wash dishes as the running water will make your fortune flow away. If you have to use the water, you hav to block the water sink so that the dirty water would not flow away.

I just feel so curiouse why in the Chinese new year traditions, trash and dirty water mean the fortune?
