There existed a balance between Mao's and Zhou's camp. In May 1966 Lin betrayed his neutral position and formed an alliance with Mao. Zhou got hit - losing He Long, Deng Xiaoping, and Peng Zhen, just to name the top three.
Zhou retreated and prepared for a coming back. He used "li Jian Ji" and successfully sent Lin to Mongolia.
