The PLA generals who carried out the execution knew that too. Most of them didn't want to but they too had to learn to survive themselves.
It doesn't matter how people lied to cover up what happened, killing the conscience and spirit of the China came with a heavy cost. Just like the old chinese saying: 天網恢恢. Every action comes with a reaction.
