I was there the whole time in 89.64. As an active participant, I personally think many of the actions were too unrealistic. If it were up to me, the movement would end before 64. And the unfortunate truth about the student leaders is: most of them were not the best or most capable ones among all the participants, instead they were more likely be at the bottom of the pack.
Having said that, how to look at 89.64 now is another story. If the majority believe that the movement went too far and should be ended by force, that is perfectly fine. But that doesn’t mean using tanks and machine guns is the only way to achieve goal, and the Chinese government holds the moral high ground after committing such atrocity. If the ultimate goal is to make China a good place for all Chinese, which is exactly what 89.64 is for, Chinese government should act in the way to unite the country and move forward, not to further divide it.
Look at the American civil war as an example, after 4 years of bloody war, the healing of the country began immediately for both north and south. How did that happen? Because president Lincoln made it clear the war is over and all Americans should put it behind and move forward together.
What did Chinese government do? Continue to divide China with its lies. You can argue that Chinese has right to do what it wants to do. The problem with this strategy is: it has no winner at the end. By labeling millions of the participants as criminals, when the entire movement is very organized except a few incidents after 64 massacre, what does China gain as a country? Other than more political dissidents, nothing. If you ever wonder why some Chinese hate China the most among all people in the world, you should know the Chinese government has been actively creating those people, intentionally or unintentionally. And Chinese government continues to be viewed as one of the most backward and corrupted regime in the world.
What should Chinese government do? Acknowledge that it did what it believed to be in the best interest of China. Acknowledge there are better ways to achieve its goal and the government will do better in the future. Acknowledge that the participants have the best intention even though the approach they took is not the most effective one. Then call for the unity of the country: if everyone shares the same goal of making China better, then let’s set aside the difference and disagreement, and work together to find solutions together.
You may say these statements are just some empty and politically correct cliché, then it is Chinese government’s responsibility to follow through and make those words become true.
