At  Mao time, most  people has not enough meat to eat , not enough protein to consumption .  The rice hybrid technique start Mao time, which can increase rice production many folds later,   Also the chemical  nitro fertilizer boost the rice  production , it also start from Mao. It is true, Den speed up China industrialization, and motivated farmer in  small factory and rice field work. At Mao time, the crop , rice just enough for people, no extra to feed herds, chicken, pig,  so basically we do not have enough meat to eat at Mao time.  Some , not lot most time. But Mao made people 99 % kids go to school, and adult also learn some reading skill. That is because Mao made enough rice or crop ,
or distribute well,  so people have time to school for learning , or reading, not for a cup of rice to work whole day. Mao also sent lot of rice to Vienam, and Albania, when lot of Chinese may still has not enough to eat, in early 1960's.  So no man is perfect.
