I had the same experience. One soldier told me he had never been

He said he never dreamed that he would feel so isolated when he walked in the streets of Beijing, among all the local people. 
He didn't hate the people, instead he can feel the hatred from local people. He felt  the soldiers were used as the scapegoat by the government.
