Man Sentenced To 26 Years In Dog Trainer's Murder
A judge has sentenced a Skagit County man convicted of killing a dog trainer to 26 years in prison.
A jury last month found Michiel Oakes guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend's ex-hu*****and, Mark Stover, who trained the pets of Pearl Jam and Nirvana, moviemaker Cameron Crowe, Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz and Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki.
The judge handed down the maximum sentence despite pleas for leniency from Oakes and his mother.
Oakes apologized to Stover's family.
"My judgment was very poor and a terrible tragedy ensued," he said.
Stover's relatives said the dog trainer was kind and generous.
Victoria Simmons, Stover's sister, said she is outraged that his body has never been found.
"Where is my brother? When will I be able to lay him to rest in a dignified manner, and how much longer can I keep this from my mother?" Simmons asked.
Theresa Vaux-Michel, Stover's fiancee, described the pain of losing him.
"Mark was committed to me. He was committed to our life together. I miss him beyond measure," Vaux-Michel said.
At trial, Oakes claimed he acted in self-defense, and he acted out how he shot Stover in what he said was a struggle over a gun.
Oakes said he then dumped Stover's body in a river.
Oakes' mother said it's the only explanation she believes.
"I can hear what he said when he said the gun went off and he sat there beside him, he sat there beside him and didn't know what to do. I would do that," said Corrie Oakes.
Oakes testified that Stover had been stalking and threatening him.
Judge Michael Rickert said the tragedy is that Stover's body is still missing.
"The absurdity of the actions you took that day are beyond belief, and I've got to tell you there's large parts of your story I flat do not believe and never will," Rickert said.
Several jurors told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Lee Stoll that they were not surprised Oakes was given the maximum sentence.
