enough to speak out on the taboo subject. After all, they don't want to be marginalized by the society. And they need to keep their "value system" propped up in front of the rest of the world. Basically they will continue holding the head high up, even though they have all the doubts about their leadership. The act of "arrogance" or "innocents" or "don't understand why the world hates us" are just fascade to keep the narrative of the dominating value system going, at the global, national and even at individual level.
YES, at the individual level too. Next time when your compassionate anglo-saxxon coworker asks you about the "lack of freedom of Chinese" or the "Tibet issue" or whatever, most likely they are not interested about the topic at hand, but as a way to assert their sense of domination over you, conciously or subconciously. In essence, the practice of "keeping the narrative proper and politically correct" is a layer of protection among the individuals. You won't understand it until you peel open that thick layer of fascade and realize how they really think in the land of "free".
They are not stupid. They just act innocent and with a hint of arrogance. :)
