　　在美國，小學生們被告訴說美國是世界上在領土上的第三大國家：俄國，加
拿大，美國。中國。中國排第四。

　　在中國，人們都被告訴中國是世界上在領土上的第三大國家：俄國，加拿大，
中國。美國。中國排第三。

　　我很感興趣，為什麽有這樣的不同？到底哪個國家的領土大些？

　　關於中國，在我們的官方網站上都是這麽說的，9，600，000平方公裏，世
界第三大。沒有多餘的細節。比如說，在中國駐印度大使館的網頁上就這麽說：

　　中國“座落在亞洲大陸東部，太平洋西海岸，中華人民共和國的領土約為九
百六十萬平方公裏，是世界上第三大國家，隻小於俄國與加拿大。”

　　【“Located in the east of the Asian continent, on the western 
shore of the Pacific Ocean, the PRC has a land area of about 9.6 
million sq km, and is the third-largest country in the world, next 
only to Russia and Canada.”】

　　關於美國，英文維基這麽說：

　　美國“是世界上第三大或第四大的國家，如果是計算其整體國土的話（包括
土地與水域）【按：美國的五大湖是算為水域領土，這裏並不包括海水疆域――
中國同樣】，在俄國與加拿大之後，大於或可能小於中國。這樣的排名取決與中
國與印度的爭端領土的計算，或美國的領土的計算方法。美國中央情報局在其出
版的《世界手冊》中說，美國的領土為9，862，275平方公裏；美國統計局說是9，
629，091平方公裏；而大英百科全書說，美國的領土麵積是9，522，055平方公
裏；如果隻計算土地麵積，那美國也是第三位，在俄國與中國之後，略領先與加
拿大。

nation by total area (land and water), ranking behind Russia and

　　以上來自大英百科全書的信息，在整體國土的計算上，把中國列入了老二的
排名。我之前從沒聽說過這樣的排名說法。我想讀者諸君也同樣是第一次聽到？
不過這也許是事實：

　　根據英文維基關於加拿大領土的信息是這樣的：

　　加拿大整體國土麵積: 9,984,670平方公裏

　　國土麵積（不包括河流與湖泊等水域）：9，093，507平方公裏

　　另外的一個網上的信息來源則對美國與中國的領土大小作出了明確對比， 
說“這取決於怎麽計算，是作為整體國土（包括土地與水域）的比較（這是《世
界手冊》的算法標準），還是隻算土地麵積（這樣的算法排除河流與湖泊的麵
積）”：

　　整體國土（包括土地與水域）：
　　美國＝9，631，418平方公裏
　　中國＝9，596，960平方公裏

　　土地國土（不包括河流與湖泊）：
　　美國＝9，161，923平方公裏
　　中國＝9，326，410平方公裏

　　【“It all depends on whether one is looking at total area (land 
and water) when making the comparison (which is the criterion used by 
the Factbook) or just land area (which excludes inland water features 
such as rivers or lakes). 

　　Total area (combining land and water) 
　　United States = 9,631,418 sq km

　　這樣看來，中國世界第三大的說法基本沒錯（可能還可以排名老二），而美
國世界第三大的說法也基本沒錯，隻是取決於計算方法而已。

　　不過，這麽一比，就可以知道中國的水資源明顯比美國或加拿大少多了。節
約用水，防止水汙染，應該成為我們的國策才行。
