I happened to have this piece on a CD which is a collection of various classical episodes. This piece is not a piano performance, but rather an orchestral one on my CD. Per dictionary, Intermezzo means "a short piece of music played alone, or one that connects to larger pieces'. In light of this, I guess it may also be construed as a prelude to some larger themes or pieces?
