The idea for GREGORIAN arose when the Hamburg music producer Frank Peterson in 1989, visited the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. Through the medieval monastery and castle walking and contemporary music on his Walkman listening, he found inspiration for the sound experiment to mix the ancient Gregorian music with modern music.
Implemented has Peterson, the idea for the first time with Michael Cretu with the global sound phenomenon Enigma. The first album MCMXC aD was released in 1990 and after a short time a worldwide success. MCMXC aD was number 1 in 41 different countries under was 57 times platinum and 45 gold medals and is considered the most successful German album of all time.
This success paved the way, the idea of GREGORIAN develop further and as a standalone music act . establish 1999, with the first album "Masters of Chant" Frank Peterson continued the tradition of success of Enigma. In the following years could GREGORIAN sell with far 11 CDs and 6 DVDs over 6 million records worldwide and achieved gold or platinum status in 24 different countries.
least once a year roams Frank Peterson, his extensive music collection in the search for new repertoire to go. Because the songs for a project like Gregorian select takes a lot of tact and inspiration. "Not every song is suited for the Gregorian sound scale," he explains, "so you have to be very careful in the selection of Gregorian." Are so happy can you be that the immensely large repertoire of knowledge Peterson seems inexhaustible, and that his ingenuity no bounds are set. Meanwhile, there is the Gregorian repertoire of nearly 200 songs, ranging from classical music by Carl Orff on pop standards of the past 40 years, to contemporary rock acts such as Metallica, Coldplay, U2 and even Rammstein.
But with Gregorian all fits together forming, one unit and the handset kidnapped with famous melodies in a completely new sound in the timeless world of Gregorian chant.
Individual creativity of Frank Peterson is also reflected in concert productions of GREGORIAN. Peterson produced inspire breathtaking shows in arenas, theaters and churches, the fans and critics in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. More than 1.5 million people have seen GREGORIAN live during their concerts in 25 countries. 2011 with more than 100 sold-out concerts was the most successful touring year for GREGORIAN. For the first time the music project was for 5 concert in China.
GREGORIAN Live is always an audio-visual spectacle, and thus it is mandatory that in 12 years until today was not a single Gregorian concert without standing ovation.
For producer and mastermind Frank Peterson, this is however, no reason to sit back. Currently Peterson has completed together with the co-producer Carsten Heusmann and Jan-Eric Kohrs, work on the new studio album of Gregorian. On "The Epic Chants" GREGORIAN presents the best songs from big blockbusters.
