門德爾鬆出生在一個德國不尋常的猶太家庭，知識和財富都很充裕的家庭，非常快音樂的家庭 祖父Moses Mendelssohn是哲學家， 像很多猶太家庭， 他父親常組織家庭周末音樂會， 門德爾鬆和姐姐Fanny常能表演，他父親很開明，並沒有讓他的子女在嚴格的猶太教環境下成長，門德爾鬆甚至後來的洗禮成為路德基督教徒，
