1852年夏季，福斯特偕妻子到肯塔基州的巴特士頓去看望他的堂兄弟，費特裏奧山丘美麗的風光，以及肯塔基農村的景物打動了他的心，促使他寫下了這首膾炙人口、抒情優美、樸實真摯的歌曲，並流傳至今。福斯特所處的時代，正是美國通過南北戰爭來解放黑奴的時代，他對美國黑人的同情，可以從他的許多著名歌曲創作中體現出來。
　　這首歌曲的音樂素材非常精練，幾乎隻是一句的反複，然而結構卻十分完整，使人不感到單調。在副歌通常應出現高潮的地方，音調也並不高揚，就象安慰人的語調一樣，十分親切：“你別哭吧，姑娘”，整個歌曲的旋律琅琅上口，音域沒有超過八度。
