往事如煙。在每個人的生活裏，都有一個“四二年夏天”。
In everyone's life, there is a "Summer of '42."

這部電影描述第二次大戰期間的1942年夏天，在某一個度假海島上，住著一位丈夫赴海外參戰的美國二十二歲的美麗少婦Dorothy。一個鄰居的少年Hermie青春萌動，一開始就被Dorothy的風情所迷倒，終於尋機跟她交上了朋友。一天，Dorothy收到了一封電報通知她丈夫的死訊，震驚與悲痛擊倒了她。少婦知道少年的心事，仿佛少年是她戰死的丈夫，兩人春風一度，第二天一早，她就遠離他鄉，隻留下一張紙條，溫和的告訴少年不要會錯意了，他們之間不可能有任何的發展和結果。

這是一部十分浪漫迷人的懷舊電影，那種懶洋洋的夏日情調在優美的配樂下相當令人陶醉，導演羅伯特．馬利根對少年人的性好奇心理亦描寫得生動自然，演員珍妮佛．歐尼爾的表演也非常有魅力，其它演員加裏．格蘭姆斯等的演出也很出色。

Michel Legrand是當代最受推崇的電影配樂大師之一，以本片獲得1971年奧斯卡最佳原作配樂。片中其實沒有任何插曲，但是由於他的配樂主旋律非常優美，被Marilyn and Alan Bergman填上歌詞，改編成the summer knows這首歌。並且被很多實力派歌手爭相灌錄成流行音樂的經典。
