　　傑裏（湯姆·克魯斯 Tom Cruise飾）待人和善，儀表不凡，是個出色的體育界經紀人。也許連天都妒嫉這個完美的男人，決定給他一個打擊，傑裏因為一篇流暢出色的發言稿而招來上司不滿，導致被炒魷魚。漂亮女友離他而去，職業前景也陷入一片迷茫，從巔峰跌入穀底的傑克在臨走前奮起疾呼，動員同事們跟他離開公司一起創業。結果，傑克隻帶走了一條魚，還有願意和他幹一番事業的會計多蘿西（芮妮·齊薇格 Renée Zellweger飾）。
　　現在，傑克的客戶隻剩下一名二流的黑人橄欖球員羅德（小庫珀·古丁 Cuba Gooding Jr飾）。萬事開頭難，傑克和多蘿西還沒有完全搞清楚要如何開始創業生涯。看來，要想迎來事業的第二春，傑克還要狠狠摸爬滾打一番；也正是在逆境中，他得以實踐自己的職業信念，並尋獲一生中的最愛。
