殘酷的照片震憾了紐約詩人Abel Meeropol，之後他寫下了載人史冊的詩“奇異果”
STRANGE FRUIT
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
And the sudden smell of burning flesh!
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
某天他把“奇異果”帶到紐約下城Greenwich Village 的cafe society酒吧，讓爵士樂手比莉哈來黛閱讀。之後比莉哈來黛在cafe society演唱了後來成為她名曲的歌曲“奇異果”。
那首歌給當時的“知識分子”帶來了無比的震憾, cafe society也一下成為了當時文人墨客們雲集的小天地。因此FBI把比莉哈來黛列入黑名單，讓她在成名之後常常領取不到紐約警察局發給的演出許可證。 比莉哈來黛不僅是一位優秀的爵士樂手，也是一位勇敢的民權鬥士。她是第一個站在舞台上麵演唱反種族仇殺的黑人樂手。
“奇異果”喚醒了無數良知的白人，成為反種族仇殺的重要曆史見證。一直廣泛流傳至今。
