	出名的東西，總是有很多解釋，甚至很多謠傳。 Eagles樂隊的著名歌曲Hotel California，其實既不是指一家旅館, 也不是一首愛情歌曲。當年的Eagles們，正當風華正茂，名聞遐邇，唱片供不應求，演唱會絡繹不絕。他們總是馬不停蹄地飛來飛去，下午去趕演唱會，半夜還要回到回錄音棚……財源滾滾，美女如雲，花天酒地，如日中天，然而，他們卻突然感到了失落，金錢、地位、名聲、女人……之後的精神失落：他們希望能超脫自己，唱出自己獨特的風格，而不是一味的追隨別人，重複自己，熬爛在那種country, folk, R&B, rock and pop 等等的大雜燴中。痛苦的失落、迷惘和掙紮中，他們開始吸毒。終於有一天，樂隊的成員之一，Don Henley，被帶進了南加州的一個戒毒中心。這個戒毒中心有一個很冠冕堂皇的名字：Camarillo State Mental Hospital。裏麵住的，都是些吸毒成性的名人以及/或者名人們的子女。 Don Henley就是在這個戒毒中心裏因禍得福，創作出令Eagles們名垂青史的Hotel California這首歌曲。 10幾年前，這家戒毒中心被關閉，搖身一變，成了California State University, Channel Island. 下麵這幅照片裏的，是下了highway之後，唯一通往那個戒毒中心的道路。

	Hotel California包裝封麵上，那個有兩個鍾樓的建築，其實是Beverly Hills Hotel。但Don Henley當年聽到的the mission bell，多半應該是來自下麵這個鍾樓。

	很多門窗上，現在還保留著鐵柵欄。那些人受不了戒毒和囚禁之苦的人，在這些鐵窗之後，用自殺選擇了“永遠的”checkout。





	從上麵的那道門進去，是一間大廳。大廳的左手邊，供奉的就是下麵這個“退役”的鐵門。

	“退役”的大門旁邊，是一個接待室。我從那裏徑直走過去，隨後聽見一個女人的聲音喊："Sir， sir，sir." 我退回去，那個年輕漂亮的女接待員笑著對我說："You can't go through that door. It's locked and you need a special badge to come back." 不知道為什麽，我突然就感覺大白天鬧鬼，好像是歌曲裏那個“stood in the doorway” 的女人在對我說話……

	上麵通過門洞可以看到的courtyard四合院，在整個校園裏到處都是。我不知道歌曲中唱到的跳舞是真正出現在某一個四合院裏，還是隻是作者的一種幻想，但那句歌詞：Some dance to remember, some dance to forget，卻是顛撲不破的經典。下麵是一個四合院的入口。

	入口左手邊的小門。歌曲中的 night man 會不會就曾守候在這裏？

	入口左手邊的門窗。說是窗，其實是幾個小洞孔。這樣的洞孔，在這個校園的建築裏比比皆是。

	某年某月的某一天，一個陌生人提著相機走進這個校園。他想感受一下 Don Henley 當年被迫生活過的地方。 Don Henley 公開承認“there was a brief period of time where I tried to put some kind of creative stock into drugs, ”“We did a lot of work on drugs in the Eagles.” 人，到了一定成就，必定有一種莫名奇妙的失落，而排除這種失落的方式之一，就是靠某種方式逃避，逃避到自己的delusion裏去。這首歌裏的warm smell of colitas，the voices down the corridor, the dance in the courtyard, mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice, the feast in the masters chambers等等，也許都隻是Don Henley吸毒或毒癮發作時的一種幻覺。撇開別的一切不說，他能夠把自我幻覺(delusion)通過歌曲的形式，升華成一種別人可以想見的夢幻(illusion)，這就是藝術，他也必定跟隨這個藝術精品而不朽。在殘酷的現實麵前，天才通過自己的幻覺創造藝術，大眾則通過這種夢幻來欣賞藝術。承認與否，很多時候，人們對藝術的欣賞和投入，是對現實的一種逃避。然而，夢幻總是虛空的，隻有現實才是鐵麵無私的殘酷存在。如何麵對現實，就是你如何生活。不懂得這一點，你就不可能明白什麽叫we are all just prisoners of our own device，什麽叫You can checkout any time you like, But you can never leave! 這首歌的價值就在於，它集中詮釋了人類的生活和命運。歌舞升平，燈紅酒綠等等，隻不過是一種被囚禁時尋歡作樂的幻覺。而人類最大的牢籠，是命運。命運麵前，你可以隨時掙紮，但你永遠逃脫不了。很多人在這裏選擇了自殺，他們以為死是一種終極解脫，然而，新的傳說是，那裏夜深人靜的時候，人們能聽見鬼的哀號…… 你隨時可以走開，但你永遠不能逃脫！
