he didn't play staccato here. You prob referred to his openning line (and a couple of other places) where he played it not as blurry or flowing as usual. He's very calculated about that. You can tell it was a choice because in the 2nd/3rd mvmt, where he played several passages as flowingly as anyone. It is glorious.

As he said several times, he tried to bring out the counterpuntal elements from the both the baroque and romatic composers, I believe the above choice was just re-stating it musically.

I've listened to Arrau's version counterless times, my recent favorite was Michelangeli. But this Gould's version has moved me a great deal, even though it's not perfect.
