The Doors著名的成軍故事是這樣的∶ 1965年的上半年，Jim Morrison都在不停的寫詩，此年夏天Jim Morrison從UCLA電影學院畢業，這是一個意義重大的夏天，他與家庭斷絕了關係，搬出了公寓開始四處流浪。在學校就學時，Jim Morrisin對音樂毫無興趣，他的大腦裏隻有電影，神學，潛意識和劇本，但在這個季風多變的夏天，Jim Morrison在美國加州威尼斯海灘散步時，遇到了UCLA的同學Ray Manzarek。Jim請Ray在沙灘上坐下，緊閉著雙眼開始低吟他當時正在寫的歌曲　詩歌之一Moonlight Drive的第一段。根據傳說，Morrison吟誦出這些詩句∶讓我們泅泳到月球　嗯，讓我們攀越浪潮　穿越為隱藏而沈睡的城市夜晚。當他念完後，Manzarek停頓了一下，然後說∶「這是我這輩子聽過最棒的歌詞，我們來組個搖滾樂團賺大錢。」Jim馬上爽快地答應∶「沒錯，這正是我腦子裏一直在想的。」於是The Doors便產生了，隨後Manzarek 在印度教超自然冥想課認識了吉他手Robbie Kreiger一個受過古典吉它良好訓練的卻總是睡眼惺鬆的布魯斯高手，和鼓手John Densmore，傳統上鼓手是樂隊的傻瓜。但John卻曾主修過心理學和物理. The Doors沒有傻瓜--鼓手也不例外。Jim Morrison並非是個天生的音樂家，他天生是位詩人，他那極高的藝術才華和天賦終歸會以某種形式表現出來，起先是電影，以後是音樂。 在1966年，The Doors在一家俱東部London Fog中尋到了一個演唱的機會，雖然這些表演得不到任何的報酬，但俱樂部給了他們一個展示才能的機會。在London Fog中演出時，Jim Morrison認識了他的嬉皮情人Pamela Courson，一位美麗而聰慧的女子，她伴隨著Jim Morrison渡過了以後的歲月。在1966年中The Doors被當地最有名的俱樂部Whiskey a-go-go相中，在秋季到來之前和Elektra簽訂了合約並錄好了第一張專輯“The Doors”。 最後成為作品永垂不朽的搖滾樂偶像。
