In Sloviansk, the Russians Hunt the People Who Are Trying to Leave
By: Giorgio Provinciali
Live from Ukraine
Sloviansk — Russian bombs and drones continue to rain down on the Ukrainian Donbas. Most of the latter are targeting fleeing civilians, preventing their evacuation.

Yesterday morning in Sloviansk, a targeted Russian attack on the town damaged twenty buildings, injured three civilians, and destroyed as many cars. In nearby Mykolaivka, occupiers targeted three apartment buildings, a single-family home, five administrative buildings, and a power pylon, reducing them to rubble. In Bilenke — a small hamlet in the Kramatorsk district where we witnessed the extent of Russian terror stalking locals 10 months ago — two civilians were seriously injured while trying to escape the rubble of their homes. Further south, in Druzhkivka, the Russian army hindered the evacuation of more civilians, brutally injuring four. Along the same route, other people were struck by a swarm of Russian drones while fleeing their homes in Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka and Osykove. Still others were struck in the central part of the Novodonetsk district.

With enormous difficulty and often serious injuries to themselves, as well as damage to their vehicles, the Ukrainian evacuees managed to save a total of 370 people, 72 of whom were children.
This was, however, only the latest entry in a twelve-year series, in which the Russian occupiers targeted another 396 fleeing Ukrainian civilians (47 of whom were children) the day before yesterday, 447 (36 children) the day before that, and so on. All official data released by the Donetsk Administration.
Suffice it to say that in the last four years alone, not counting the bloodbaths in Mariupol’ and Volnovakha, the Moscow regime has killed 4,025 Ukrainian civilians and injured 9,291 in this part of Donbas.

Almost certainly, most were Russian-speakers. These statistics have been recorded daily by local authorities since February 24, 2022, when Putin declared the inevitability of a special military operation to «save» these people.
Yesterday, the Russian army continued to harass fleeing buses and cars, injuring more Ukrainian civilians, even in remote areas like Cherkasky. The clips we will make available on “La Ragione’s” YouTube channel in the next few hours (some are already online) require no further explanation.
As in much of the rest of the country, it’s snowing here in Donetsk, even though it’s late April. Not far from Sloviansk, when we stopped, exhausted, to warm ourselves with a hot drink, the drone detectors began to blare. Soon, the air-raid warning also began to echo: some of the quadcopters flying over our positions were reconnaissance aircraft, while others were certainly carrying sniper munitions. Various Russian UAVs with high-explosive potential began to make themselves heard in the distance.

Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire has legendary effectiveness, recognized worldwide, not least in the Middle East, in shooting them down. However, this does not rule out the possibility of a fatal event for anyone caught in the path of a flock of those vectors of death. So much so that some fiery lapilli set a clearing not far from us on fire. To smother the flames, the Ukrainian soldiers who arrived even used their own jackets. Once the fire was extinguished, we gave them ours so they wouldn’t be left in the freezing cold. Stopping your car, even for quick operations, can be fatal in these parts these days. In fact, the radars started ringing again every time someone stopped to help us.

As with every other occasion when the bloodthirsty regime in Moscow has granted a ceasefire, the so-called “Easter truce” fits precisely into this context and poses the risk of further widespread attacks across Ukraine, for which local authorities have already been warned.

After a long series of massacres of innocents caused by Russian bombs in Ukraine over the previous 24 hours, on Thursday we concluded a dispatchfrom Nikopol’ on these pages, noting that — according to data published the day before by LSEG — Russian gas imports to the EU increased by 17% in the last quarter compared to the previous year, reaching 4.8 million tons. Before us was a Ukrainian bus gutted by a Russian drone, pieces of human flesh strewn across the asphalt, and a pool of blood so large it spilled onto the sidewalks on both sides of the road.
Shortly before our latest from Sloviansk, our colleagues at the Financial Times reminded us that «97% of all goods coming from the Russian hub of Yamal [one of the largest and most strategic gas production and liquefaction facilities in the world] are destined for European Union ports», clearing two possible reasons: Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, stemming from the Israeli-American attacks — which, in response, damaged the infrastructure through which LNG supplies from Qatar flow — and sanctions that have made it more difficult to redirect Russian goods to Asia, effectively making the European market the only available destination.
It’s not haze that’s clouding our vision.

In 1.508 days of war, we recorded over 250 videos from ground zero and wrote more than 1,500 articles.
We are doing our best to provide genuine, first-hand reports from zones where almost no press dares to go. This means living in a kill zone constantly. We take the risk, but without your invaluable support, our voices would remain unheard and silent. Without brave people sharing our articles from afar, they would remain unread. Our reports would go unseen, and our efforts would be lost. There’s still a lot of work to do here, as the people around us are also in no better situation.
We’re renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping to restore what Russia is destroying. Moving forward with only a small reimbursement for each article from a brave newspaper that believes in us is extremely challenging. That’s why we are grateful to all the kind people who support us and trust in our mission.
Even a small donation helps.
We’ll keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends

Giorgio Provinciali)
