Resisting Indifference: How Pokovsk Is Not the Gateway to Donbas

Dnipro — The war rages on all fronts, and Ukrainian cities are under increasing attack. This is what Donald Trump’s so-called ‘peace efforts’ have led to. Last night, at least three violent explosions shook Dnipro when Russian missiles hit a local civilian facility. This is just one of many non-military targets bombed daily across the country. Even before the American withdrawal, the Russian Federation had shown its rejection of every principle of international law; however, today, the lack of a superpower willing to impose limits allows it to act with impunity.
In the past week alone, Russia has dropped 1,170 guided aerial bombs on Ukraine and launched nearly 1,500 drones against its cities, along with another 70 missiles of various types, including ballistic and cruise ones. Commenting on this destruction, which has not received an adequate international response, the Ukrainian president urged his allies to act, saying, «Normal people don’t fight like this».
One of those shots, aimed at the Sloviansk power plant, killed two men and caused the entire Donetsk region to lose power for several hours. Another hit the television tower in Chernihiv, a city now under a 15-hour air raid siege. Others targeted civilian infrastructure in Sumy, including medical facilities where 15 injured people, including four children, were being rushed. The Russians also struck the Kherson market, killing two civilians and wounding seven. They launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile armed with a cluster warhead at Mykolaiv, with its submunitions hitting a gas station, killing one person and injuring 19, including a nine-year-old girl. They launched a combined attack on the Vinnytsia region, bombarding the skies with 90 drones and cruise missiles and damaging 23 homes, home to as many people, including a 7-year-old girl, who died. Not far from where I’m writing, the Russian Armed Forces injured 23 people, including 6 children, in an attack on Zaporizhzhia that to call ferocious is an understatement. Between artillery, rocket-propelled shells, and drones, they launched 720 rounds in less than 24 hours on this oblast’ alone. More generally, yesterday, Moscow attacked Ukraine with 705 weapons, deliberately targeting mostly civilian sites with 653 drones and 52 other missiles of various types.
Over 37,000 attacks took place on the front lines. The occupiers are storming the Pokrovsk area to reclaim its rubble, despite the intervention of Ukrainian paratroopers from the GUPR special forces in recent hours to prevent this plan. Fighting is now street-to-street and bloody.
This is the context for Donald Trump’s latest cynical ‘peace effort’, which consists in claiming that «there’s no last straw that can break the camel’s back’»to show that Putin doesn’t even want a truce. Saying that «sometimes you have to let the conflict play out, letting them fight among themselves», Trump has decided to wash his hands of the matter, believing that the American withdrawal will hasten the Ukrainian resistance in the Donbas and lead to the eventual fall of Pokrovsk. But from there to reality lies the Ukrainian Resistance. Immense, extraordinary. Superhuman. Fighting like titans, the Ukrainians repelled the Russian offensive at Myrnohrad, broke the enemy salient at Kupiansk, and neutralized over two hundred Russian raiders who had penetrated Pokrovsk.
Although the situation remains critical, contrary to what Donald Trump and peace theorists believe —argueing that Ukrainian surrender is necessary—the eventual fall of Pokrovsk, due to Western disengagement, would by no means lead to the collapse of Donbas.
First of all, Pokrovsk is not part of the so-called Donbas fortress belt— which includes cities such as Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, and Druzhkivka—but is right on its doorstep. That unified fortified zone marks the Donbas front. Pokrovsk does not, even though it was an important logistics and energy hub for Ukraine, and losing its coal mines would be a severe blow. Putin knows full well that Pokrovsk is not the key to Ukrainian Donbas, but he believes that capturing it would prove him right politically in the eyes of those who see every missile sent to Ukraine as a waste. Conversely, the Ukrainians defend Pokrovsk because it symbolizes their resilience against the Russian invader and Western apathy.
The inadequate military support of the free world Ukraine fights for makes the conflict even more dire. The Russians are gathering large amounts of military equipment and troops in Pokrovsk, relocating them from other fronts, such as nearby Kostiantynivka. At the same time, they are urging Trump to persuade Zelensky to give up the impenetrable Donbas defensive belt — which does not include Pokrovsk — thereby giving them control over the rest of Ukraine. This has led to increased bombings of cities and the destruction on the front described above. The approach of peace, according to Donald Trump.
